Before there was Tom Brady and Eli Manning, there was Joe Namath. I just got through watching HBO’s fantastic documentary Namath that premiered last weekend, and I couldn’t help but be impressed by the guy who was known as Broadway Joe, among other nicknames. To this day, he remains an engaging personality who, with his guarantee that the underdog Jets would win Super Bowl III, helped make the Super Bowl - and NFL football overall - the spectacle it is today. I could only imagine the kind of soundbites he would deliver if he had access to a Twitter handle at the time! Probably one of quirkiest things I learned in the documentary was that Namath was the first player to sport a full-length fur coat while on the sidelines. Too bad players are banned from doing so today — they would probably rival whatever Madonna’s wearing at this year’s Super Bowl Halftime Show! If you get a chance, make sure to check out Namath, it’s a fascinating look into this cultural icon.
